Connection to Creation

Janine Cooley - Biography

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures.” - Henry Ward Beecher

My pastel paintings emerge from a deep connection to creation, channeled through an almost meditative process that evokes a sense of peace beyond my conscious control. They are primarily landscapes, inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s dramatic light and forms; I intersperse florals to loosen my marks and recharge my intuition. My impressionistic style employs bold colors and expressive strokes—vibrant greens often slashed with muted violets—to capture fleeting emotions rather than literal scenes. This approach invites viewers to linger in tranquility, finding resonance in nature’s quiet power amid everyday chaos.

From Left Brain to Right Brain

My path has taken me from a career as a family physician to finding meaning and expression through art. After retiring in 2020, I focused on pastel painting, though I also enjoy creative expression through cooking, quilting, and yarn art. Born in the Bay Area, I’ve spent my adult life immersed in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. My daughter lives in the Methow Valley of Washington State  and my travels there often inspire my paintings.
